Well done Alyssa, Cameron and James your tweets made it to 'Tweet of the Week'. Kids Chat this week was all about sport and learning. Room 16 watched and answered the questions as part of their 'Daily 5' activity. They worked with a buddy and discussed the questions. The class then used Google Doc's to record their answers. I absolutely loved hearing all the conversations going on. It was interesting to hear and read what they wrote. What really impressed me were comments about being 'independent learners'. We had a great session today. Yesterday, we got the chance to go and visit the Christchurch Art Gallery. It was amazing! Because the gallery building is still getting fixed we visited the Art Box. They are hosting a family-focused exhibition powered by the excitement of seeing ordinary things transformed in unexpected ways. It is called Burster Flipper Wobbler Dripper Spinner Stacker Shaker Maker. They have morphed a lot of ordinary everyday items to create some amazing art. Our class really loved the sculpture made out of pencils! We even got to create our own art based on Miranda Parkes art work called the 'Slump' This week we have been working on our poetry slams.
So what is a Poetry Slam? A slam itself is simply a poetry competition in which poets perform original work alone or in teams before an audience, which serves as judge. The work is judged as much on the manner and enthusiasm of its performance as its content or style, and many slam poems are not intended to be read silently from the page. The class is working as individuals or in groups. Most have chosen to write a poem based around our Spreydon Value of Relastionships. As we celebnrated 'Pink Shirt Day' most of our themes are based on 'Bullying'. We have watched a lot of Poetry Slams and we really enjoyed Sarah Kay and Shane Koyczan. Next week we will work on how to use our voices to get our message acrross Title: Journey to Jo'burg
Author: Beverley Naidoo This is a great book to read for children and adults. About this book: Room 16 has just finished reading the book 'Journey to Jo'burg'. It is about two kids Naledi and Tiro and how they made a big decision that was very dangerous. Their baby sister was ill and needed her mother. Their mother was working in Johannesburg, 300 miles away. The only way to reach her was to walk there. We learnt that is like walking from Christchurch to Gore! And they did it all by themselves. This is what part of the blurb said. Set against the dangerous landscape of apartheid South Africa, JOURNEY TO JO' BURG is the inspiring story of two brave children who will do anything to save their little sister. We learnt a lot about how life was very different during the apartheid and how things have changed. Sometimes it was hard to comprehend that people lived in houses that only had one room. Or that there was no running water inside. Or that parents had to leave their children to work somewhere else and only saw them every few months for maybe 3 days. This book made us really think and reminded us about the struggles that some people have to face. It also made us realise how lucky we are to live in a country like New Zealand. So homework this term is about volunteers. We have to volunteer somewhere for at least 30 minutes. For my homework I am going to Olympia Gymnastics Club to help out with the little kids. One day they are going to be tough, and strong like me. I might help out three times every Saturday then I have to train straight afterwards. Once I have completed my volunteering, I have to think of a creative way to present what I did to the class. I am getting my thinking hat on! Brieannah. Last week we learnt all about Prezi . Prezi is a cloud-based presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. The class had a great time experimenting with it. One of their tasks was to research a Volunteering organisation and find out how it helps people. We are learning all about Volunteers at the moment and how they impact of peoples lives. There were some fantastic presentations and we now know a lot more about the different organisations out there making a difference.
Ducks hanging out with awesome Ava!
Ava loves the ducks so much she asked for a photo and she got one - thanks to Kyra. She asked for a photo infront of room 13 so we could also share the amazing art and poems they have been creating. Yesterday room 16 joined up with their buddy class room 8 to watch the Kids Café presentations. They had such a great time watching all the other children and their wonderful talents they shared. |
